Niebuhr, Reinhold (1892-1971), American Protestant scholar, whose social regulations significantly affected American philosophical and political idea. Conceived in Wright City, Missouri, June 21, 1892, he was instructed at Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Illinois; Eden Theological Seminary, Webster Groves, Missouri; and Yale Divinity School. In 1915 he was appointed in the service of the Evangelical Synod of North America and made minister of the Bethel Evangelical Church of Detroit. He held that post until 1928, at which time he joined the workforce of the Union Theological Seminary, New York City, where he instructed for a long time. At the hour of his retirement (1960) he held a seat of morals and religious philosophy; he additionally filled in as senior member (1950-55) and VP (1955-60). In the wake of resigning he proceeded at Union as a speaker. An extraordinary, despite the fact that not a precise, scholar, Niebuhr was eminent fundamentally for his assessment of the interrelationships between religion, people, and present day society. Outside the field of religious philosophy, he took a distinct fascination for worker's guild and political issues.
